Module summary
This intensive module requires students to demonstrate an ability to learn another foreign language (via the pre-requisite of grade A or B at A-Level in another Language). The teaching is by means of the Spanish Language with students gaining a thorough grounding in Spanish grammar, the ability to write and speak the language with basic competence in a variety of contexts and sufficient confidence and skills to undertake private readings in Spanish and use them as a learning tool. The module is the ideal route for those students who want to incorporate Spanish as a Minor subject into their degree.
This 40 credit module is taught within the Department of Spanish and Portuguese. Students with prior knowledge of Spanish should consider other modules taught either by the Department or by the Language Centre. Objectives
On completion of the module students should be able to:
Show a basic knowledge of Spanish grammar, including a fair level of competence in the majority of the Spanish verbal tenses of the indicative and imperative moods, as well as in the basics of the present and the imperfect of subjunctive mood.
Use a vocabulary of approximately 1,000 words and be able to recognise about 2,000 words.
Read confidently intermediate to advanced texts in Spanish, particularly with a view to undertaking year 1 foundation modules of Spanish culture and history in year 2.
Write and speak Spanish in a variety of contexts.
Communicate in everyday situations, showing awareness of cultural conventions in language usage.
Syllabus
The module aims to provide the student with a thorough grounding in Spanish grammar, and to write and speak the language with basic competence in a variety of contexts. All of the principal grammatical constructions are introduced, with an active vocabulary of approximately 1,000 words, enabling the student to communicate in everyday situations and undertake readings for foundation modules in Spanish culture and history.
